The forklift operator places or retrieves a pallet at the lane entrance, and the shuttle does the rest. This eliminates the need for aisles between every row, dramatically compressing the storage footprint. In a real-world comparison involving a motor oil distributor, a pallet shuttle system yielded 1,560 pallet positions in the same space where selective racking produced only 864, an increase of over 80 percent in storage capacity.

Four-way shuttle systems go further still, allowing the cart to travel both longitudinally within a lane and laterally across the racking structure. Selective racking, by contrast, supports random access to any pallet at any time. A 3PL handling dozens of different client inventories, for example, typically cannot afford the lane-level SKU discipline that a shuttle system demands.

The throughput advantage of shuttle systems becomes most visible in receiving and bulk replenishment. A single shuttle can cycle pallets into deep lanes far faster than a forklift navigating a traditional aisle layout, and with far less forklift traffic, the risk of rack damage and operator injury decreases substantially.
