Stacker Cranes

Stacker Cranes (AS/RS for Pallets) are an automated high-density storage solution designed to maximize warehouse capacity while improving speed, accuracy, and productivity. The system uses automated stacker cranes that travel through narrow aisles to store and retrieve pallets at designated rack locations. By operating at heights of up to 131 feet and in aisles as narrow as 5 feet, stacker cranes make exceptional use of both vertical and horizontal warehouse space.

This automated storage and retrieval system can be configured for a wide variety of pallet sizes, product types, and operational requirements. Stacker cranes work together with pallet racking, conveyors, control systems, and warehouse management software to automate the movement of goods throughout the storage process. Systems can be designed with single- or double-deep racking configurations to increase capacity while maintaining controlled access to stored pallets.

Stacker crane systems are especially beneficial for facilities that require high storage density, consistent product movement, and precise inventory control. By automating pallet entry, storage, retrieval, and exit, AS/RS stacker cranes can reduce manual handling, improve operational reliability, and provide greater control over warehouse inventory and material flow.

How Stacker Cranes Work

Stacker crane systems are automated storage and retrieval systems designed to maximize warehouse capacity while improving the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of pallet handling. The system uses an automated stacker crane that travels along a rail within narrow storage aisles, moving both horizontally and vertically to place and retrieve pallets from designated rack locations. By reducing aisle widths and taking advantage of greater building height, stacker cranes allow facilities to achieve significantly higher storage density within the same footprint.

The core components of a stacker crane AS/RS include the pallet racking structure, stacker crane, rail and guidance system, load-handling device, conveyors or pallet transfer equipment, and an automated control and warehouse management system. These components work together to automatically transport, store, locate, and retrieve pallets with minimal manual intervention. Sensors and control systems continuously monitor equipment movement and pallet positioning to support safe and reliable operation. Stacker crane systems are an effective solution for facilities requiring high storage density, fast pallet movement, precise inventory control, and increased warehouse automation, making them especially valuable for distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, cold storage
